Jinming Gao is a Professor of Oncology, Pharmacology and Otolaryngology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the Elaine D. Sammons Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research, in Honor of Eugene P. Frenkel, M.D. Dr. Gao received his B.S. in chemistry from Peking University and graduated with a PhD in physical organic chemistry from Harvard University. He completed postdoctoral training in biomedical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Gao started his faculty career in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. He moved his lab to UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2005. Dr. Gao has written more than 130 articles and has 14 issued or pending patents worldwide. A noteworthy achievement of Dr. Gao’s lab is the invention of proton transistor technology to digitize acidotic signals in biology and medicine. Together with Dr. Baran Sumer, a long-time collaborator and a head/neck cancer surgeon, Dr. Gao founded OncoNano Medicine to help translate proton transistor technology to patient care. A fluorescent nanoparticle sensor, ONM-100, has successfully completed Phase I clinical trial in 30 cancer patients and received a fast-track status from the FDA to start the Phase 2 trial in pan-cancer surgery. In recent years, Dr. Gao’s lab has moved into the field of nano-immuno-oncology. As part of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative from the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Gao is leading a U54 Nano-Immune-Engineering Center to develop innovative nanotherapeutics to advance cancer immunotherapy.
